2. Re: Sales Tax on clothing in NYC vs. NJ
Much depends on what you are planning to buy. Currently, in NYC (different rules for different locations in New York STATE) ta is 4.875% on clothing items under $110, 8.875% on items $110 and more.
Only you can decide if the amount you save is worth the cost of travel and time. For example, heading to Newport Mall - round trit transit $3.50 per person, travel time about 30 minutes each way. So if you are purchasing just a few items, total cost $200 but no item over $110 your total cost in Manhattan would be $208.88, in NJ if just one person goes it would be $203.50, if two go the cost is $207.
But if you are buying more the extra savings might be worth it to you.
Addtionally, there are some shops in Manhattan, like Century 21, that aren't as easy to get to by mass transit. And the selection at the NYC stores might be greater. Macy*s herald square store is huge, the Newport Center store is only about 1/4 the size.
